Sequestration, wildfire, and the question we can’t afford to leave to scientists alone
Three things landed on my desk around the same time this summer: the uncertainty in the province's Allowable Annual Cut numbers, which runs wider than most people in this industry say out loud; sixty-five years of harvest data set next to sixty-five years of regrowth data, which don't agree with each other; and, outside my office window, about half this province on fire.
Put those three things next to each other long enough, and a person starts asking questions.
I'm not a scientist. I'm a geological engineer, forty years of reading rock, and more recently, reading forests. A lot of this takes time to land, even for me. I read something, don't fully get it, read it again, go stand in the bush and look at the actual thing the paper is describing. Eventually it clicks. That's the only kind of genius I've got. I just keep showing up for class.
I think that matters, because it is likely most people's experience too, and surely not enough of what gets written about carbon and forests and climate accounts for it.
Ninety-eight percent of the people reading this are not scientists either. That was, in my opinion, David Suzuki's hardest and most important fight, not the data, which was always solid, but the translation of it. Most of us stop formal science education somewhere around grade eleven, in a curriculum built to guarantee a passing rate, not to prepare anyone to read a peer-reviewed carbon model. Then we go live our lives. So, when a paper full of confidence intervals and cumulative allowable-cut projections crosses our path, most people do the reasonable thing: they turn away and get on with the day.
I don't think that's a failure of the reader. I think it's a failure of the language and those we entrust with our governance. So let me try a plainer version of what I've been writing about.
The Pump
Somewhere under every hectare of standing forest, and through the water of every ocean on this planet, there is a pump running. It has been running for something like three billion years, since the first organisms figured out how to pull carbon out of the air and lock it into something solid, wood, root, seashells, soil. It doesn't send invoices. It doesn't hold press conferences. It just moves carbon, year after year, out of the atmosphere, where it traps heat, and into forests and oceans, where it does not.
That's the pump. That's sequestration, in one sentence: carbon, taken out of the air, and put somewhere it will stay.
Every tree laying down a new ring of wood this summer is the pump at work. Every root pushing sugars into the soil fungi beneath it is the pump at work. Every hectare of standing old growth that stays standing this decade is the pump, still running, quietly, the way it always has.
Here's a way to picture the size of it. A tree that's stood for eighty years has been quietly pulling carbon out of the air the entire time, roughly a tonne of it, locked into the wood itself. Burn that tree in an afternoon, and eighty years of the pump's work goes back into the sky in about twenty minutes. Poof.
That's the trade: decades in for a tree, millions of years in for an oil reserve,…minutes out.
And every hectare that burns before it has had the decades it needs to regrow, every stand clear-cut faster than the models assumed it would replace itself, every root system too degraded to move carbon into soil anymore, that's the pump, slowing down, or dying. In some of the clear-cut ground I've walked over the past year, survey after survey, it isn't slowing down. It's running backward. It has become a carbon source instead of a sink. A living, breathing forest is called a carbon sink because it is sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. This helps to make the atmosphere cooler.
When the pump stops, not slows, but stops, net carbon moving the wrong direction across enough hectares for long enough doesn't send a warning. There's no light on the dashboard. You get the bill instead. And this year, around the world, the bill has been arriving as fire, heat, and smoke.
This isn't an abstract problem for a future decade. A child born in BC this year will be entering the workforce around 2050, the same year most current forecasts assume the province's forests will need to be net carbon sinks again, not sources. Whether that's realistic depends entirely on decisions being made right now, and we're still using AAC numbers with a 30–60% uncertainty band. For a parent, that's not a policy detail. That's the air, the water table, and the wildfire risk their kid inherits.
For someone older, the stakes look different but land just as close to home. The people my age have already watched summers change, smoke seasons that didn't used to exist, favourite places that don't look the way they did twenty years ago. That's not a projection. That's a friend, a lake, a hiking trail, already gone or going.

The Next Word
A few weeks ago I wrote about a pattern I've watched play out for fifty years: every decade an incredible new word enters the mainstream; Recycle (Earth Day, 1970), Sustainable (UN Brundtland Commission, 1987), Stewardship (ISO 14001, 1980s), LEED (US Green Building Council, launched 2000), WELL (Building Standard, launched 2014), each one born in genuine practice, each one eventually flattened into a marketing line, and each one leaving something real behind anyway, embedded in a generation that learned to ask better questions.
Well, it's 2026, and most of the world is gasping for air. I think I know what the next word is.
Sequestration.
It's an awkward word. Nobody's putting it on a tote bag. It sounds like something that happens to your car in a parking dispute, not like the single most important verb left in the entire climate conversation. But that's what it is, and almost nobody outside a forestry office or a climate lab could tell you, off the top of their head, what it means.

Recycling taught a generation to ask: where does this go?
Sequestration is going to have to teach the next one a harder question: is our world's respiratory system still working?
Because here is the thing that makes this word different from every other one on that list. Recycle, Sustainable, Stewardship, LEED, WELL, every one of those asked us to do a little less harm. Sequestration is the only word on the list that describes the machine that undoes harm already done. It's not a behaviour. It's a mechanism. And a mechanism can be measured, and audited, and, this is the part that should worry all of us,….it can fail.

What This Word Deserves
Every word on that earlier list got hijacked eventually. Recyclable packaging that never got recycled. Sustainability reports from companies whose supply chains told a different story. I'd be lying if I said I think Sequestration is going to be immune. Somebody is probably putting it on a tote bag as I write this sentence.
But I would rather spend whatever energy I have left making sure the real meaning gets understood by people before the marketing version arrives, than watch it happen to this word too without having said anything.
Because I don't think we have the decade the earlier words got. Recycling had roughly ten years to work its way from Earth Day into curbside bins into common vocabulary, and that timeline was fine, because a slower rollout didn't cost anyone the pump. The uncertainty bands in the AAC numbers I've spent the past year staring at run wider than anyone in this industry is comfortable admitting publicly. And the smoke outside my window this summer is not a metaphor for any of it. It's the thing itself.
Still in Class
I'm not going to pretend the uncertainty in these numbers is smaller than it is, or that I've got this fully figured out. I don't. I'm still in class, same as anyone reading this.
But I keep showing up. And if there's one honest instruction I can offer, it's that one: you don't need a science degree to understand a pump. You just need to know what happens when it stops.
It doesn't sputter. It doesn't flash a warning light first. It just stops, and then the very same forests that spent decades quietly pulling carbon out of the sky start putting it back, all at once, as smoke.
The mainstream learned the word Recycle over the course of a decade, at a pace that cost nothing extra because the pump kept running the whole time.
Sequestration doesn't have that runway. The pump is already running backward in places that have been surveyed and measured. Understanding the word isn't optional anymore, it's the only thing standing between life and death.
